Making Friends on Facebook

What if you don't live in the same place you went to high school at, you don't belong to the PTA, you just got to town and honestly, that "sphere of influence" they talk about in training...it's hundreds of miles away.

No worries. I'm going to tell you how I made a few hundred friends in my rural county - and how you can make friends too.

Y'all...this one is so simple, I feel silly for even writing it...but here we go.

You know that "Friend Request" button on Facebook? Hit it. That's it.

I only knew 10 people in my county when I started with real estate. Now, my county is 65,000 people, the size of a small town, but I knew 10.

This is the kind of place where everyone graduated from the local high school, their kids went to pre-school together, etc, etc. How would I ever expect to break into the real estate game here - when the local real estate brokers were well known, had hometown swagger and knew everyone already???

What I KNEW - people really would want to be my friend - if they just got to know me.

Now, I'm not super social - (you'd never know that from my public persona) and I shy away in a 'networking' type setting. So, I had to go where I was comfortable. And that was Facebook.

Remember those 10 people I was friends with? I just went to their friends list, and I started requesting to be friends with a couple of their friends each day. (Again - they WOULD want to be friends with me - if they knew me - I am just making this easier).

Pretty soon, Facebook started joining in my new social quest and I would find them suggesting new friends to me that had THREE friends in common. When I'd look - sure enough, the friends in common were from my county. DONE!! Friend requested.

Once I had a few dozen friends from our county, I made sure to become friends with those who would be important in my growth. The realtors in the area - FRIENDED. The elected officials - FRIENDED. Builders, developers, small business owners - FRIENDED.

Now, three years later, people come up to me and say "We're friends on Facebook, but I'm not sure we've ever met - it's great to actually meet you." I've got clients from my friends list and made actual FRIENDS from my friends list.

Trust me, you're a nice person. People who know you, like you. If you allow others to know you - they'll like you too.

Go make 3 new friends today from Facebook.

This is Simple. Not Easy.
